Aurora police drone finds DUI suspect hiding in porta-potty after Colfax Avenue chase

Aurora police used a drone to locate a DUI suspect hiding in a porta-potty after a vehicle chase on Colfax Avenue, according to the department.

The pursuit began after officers attempted to stop a driver suspected of driving under the influence, Aurora police said. The driver fled, leading officers on a chase along Colfax Avenue before the vehicle was stopped.

The suspect then fled on foot and attempted to evade capture by hiding inside a portable toilet, according to Aurora police. Officers deployed a drone equipped with a thermal imaging camera to search the area.

The drone detected the suspect’s heat signature inside the porta-potty, police said. Officers moved in and arrested the suspect without further incident.

Aurora police said the suspect was taken into custody and booked on charges related to the pursuit and suspected impaired driving. The suspect’s name was not immediately released.

Aurora police said no injuries were reported during the chase or arrest.

Aurora police said the drone allowed officers to find the suspect after he left the vehicle and concealed himself in the portable toilet. The department has used aerial surveillance and search-and-rescue tools in recent years.

Colfax Avenue runs through Aurora and several neighboring cities, including Denver.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
