Trespasser detained at Denver airport after crossing airfield fence, months after person struck by jet

DENVER, Colo. A trespasser was detained and hospitalized Monday after crossing a perimeter fence into the restricted airfield at Denver International Airport, airport officials said. The incident occurred five months after another person entered the same area and was struck by a jet.

The Denver Police Department responded to the airport after the person breached the fence, airport officials said. The trespasser was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for evaluation. Officials did not release the person's identity or condition.

Airport officials said the person never reached an aircraft or runway and did not affect flight operations. Denver International Airport remained open while police responded.

Investigators are still examining a May incident at the airport in which a person was struck by a jet after entering the airfield. Authorities have not said whether that person survived, and that case remains under investigation.

The latest breach involved the airport's perimeter fencing, which is meant to keep unauthorized people away from active taxiways, runways and aircraft. Airport officials did not say Monday whether additional security measures were being considered.

Denver International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the United States by passenger traffic and covers more than 33 square miles. Airport officials have said its size makes the perimeter difficult to secure entirely.

Authorities have not said whether the trespasser will face charges. The investigation remains active.
