Denver man says driver chased Waymo to Broadway and pelted car with eggs near 11th Avenue

A Denver man says the driverless Waymo he was riding in was chased to Broadway and hit with eggs after another driver took aim at the robotaxi near 11th Avenue.

The incident happened in Denver's central business district, where Waymo's autonomous vehicles have become a regular sight on city streets. The rider said the human driver appeared to single out the vehicle because it had no one behind the wheel.

According to the rider, the other driver followed the Waymo to Broadway before throwing eggs at the vehicle. The eggs struck the car as it moved through the area near 11th Avenue, leaving residue on the body and windows.

The rider said the encounter was frightening and frustrating because the vehicle had no driver who could respond in real time.

Waymo said it is aware of reports of damage to one of its vehicles in Denver and is looking into the incident. The company did not immediately release details on whether the vehicle was taken out of service or if it had identified the suspect.

Denver police did not immediately provide information on whether a report had been filed or if any arrests had been made.

Waymo has said its vehicles are programmed to follow traffic laws and avoid unsafe behavior. The company has not publicly commented on how often its cars are targeted by other drivers.

The rider said he hopes police take the incident seriously and that other drivers will not take out their frustration on an autonomous vehicle.

"It's just a car trying to get from one place to another," the rider said. "There's no reason to attack it."
