RTD uses $44 million Colorado grant to add bus trips on Denver and Boulder routes

The Regional Transportation District will use a $44 million state grant to add bus trips across metro Denver and Boulder. The additional service will run on routes that have faced cuts and gaps since the pandemic.

RTD said the funding will restore and expand frequency on existing bus lines, including the Flatiron Flyer, which connects Denver and Boulder along U.S. 36. The agency did not release a full list of affected routes or the date the added trips will begin.

The grant comes from the Colorado Department of Transportation through a state program that supports transit service recovery. RTD officials said the money will help cover the cost of running more buses and hiring operators needed to keep the added trips in service.

The agency reduced bus service during the pandemic as ridership dropped and staffing shortages grew. Some routes saw lower frequency or shortened hours, and RTD has been under pressure from riders and local officials to bring back reliable service.

State transportation officials said the funding is aimed at helping transit agencies stabilize operations and reach riders who depend on buses for work, school and daily travel.

RTD said it will post updated schedules before the new trips start. Riders can check individual route schedules on the RTD website or through the agency’s mobile app once changes are published.
